Leading Death of Guanacos

The negative effects fences have on guanacos are life threatening. Guanacos are a type of wild llama native to South america. Fences are the leading cause of death for guanacos; they get caught in barbed wire fences and starve to death. Fences cause danger to wild animals all over the world,“In Wyoming, fences are coming down to make way for wildlife” According to (Rosner). Volunteers gather together to take down fences that interrupt animal migration.

While trying to migrate, some animals try to jump these fences, and they get their legs caught in the barbed wire; they get cuts and scars that get infected leading to death. Fences in Africa block the pathway of zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, buffalo, and other animals. “There is more border fencing now than there was in the cold war”(Rosner). The border with the US and Mexico is thirty feet high and interrupts migration for jaguars, ocelots, Mexican grey wolves and many other animals trying to migrate.

Fences are not only used to keep cows, horses, and dogs in one place, but they also interrupt and kill the wildlife. Fences are not only interrupting migration roads, pipelines, and subdivisions, they also interrupt wildlife migration. Volunteers are still working to take down decades-old fences that are not serving any purpose.
