A “Tail” of Two Cats

Everything in Quinn’s life was perfect; she had everything that a cat dreamed of. Quinn’s life changed when a black and white kitten named Oreo was adopted from the animal shelter. When Oreo first came, Quinn was not very happy. Quinn tried to be a friend to the new kitten and show her the ropes. Quinn later became the mother figure in Oreo’s life. Quinn later introduced Oreo to the family. Oreo was introduced to Cookie, the black and tan dachshund, Brownie, the red dachshund, and Violet, the tricolor beagle. Quinn then told Oreo that Violet was the friendliest dog there was, while Cookie was still friendly, and Brownie, not so much. Quinn then warned Oreo that Brownie would be friendly at first but then would become mean as time passed. Quinn also warned Oreo, “Watch out for Brownie, because he likes to chase cats.”

Even though Quinn was very kind and showed Oreo the ropes, Oreo had other ideas. Oreo was led by her curious personality and was always ready for mischief. She had ideas of discovering new things to play with, such as the dogs’ tails, power cords, and shoelaces. Oreo thought, “These would be fun to play with.” However, Quinn was not pleased by Oreo’s actions. Quinn told Violet that she thought Oreo’s behavior was “ridiculous,” but Violet did not respond to this. Oreo did not care what Quinn or anyone else thoughts, she only cared about her own opinion.

Quinn was not pleased with another one of Oreo’s ideas, which was to disturb Quinn’s sleep. Oreo did many things to make sure that Quinn did not get her beauty sleep. Oreo would walk across the piano and play an “Oreo concerto” at all hours of the day and night; she would pounce on Quinn, she would bite Quinn’s tail, and would meow loudly. All of these are things Quinn hated. When Quinn woke up after Oreo had woken her, Quinn was very annoyed and usually growled and hissed at Oreo. Quinn said to Oreo, “I need to stuff you in a drawer to get some sleep around here.” Oreo said, “All I wanted to do was play with my mommy!”

Quinn was annoyed with yet another one of Oreo’s ideas. Oreo’s next idea was to copy absolutely everything that Quinn did. Oreo copied Quinn in every possible way, but the most noticeable, Oreo followed Quinn everywhere and even tried to sit in the same spot as Quinn. These things annoyed Quinn very much. Quinn had an independent personality and liked to be left alone. On the other hand, Oreo had a more dependent personality and wanted to be around other people. Oreo also jumped in the kitty-city at the same time as Quinn. Quinn would then say to Oreo, “Get your tail out of my face!” Oreo responded, “I just wanted to sit with my mommy!”

The next of Oreo’s ideas was not a brilliant one in Quinn’s eyes either. Oreo thought it would be fun to get the humans involved this time. Oreo went up to her human brother and decided to climb him like he was a tree. Quinn thought that Oreo was “dumb” and said to her, “Brother is not for climbing. He is not a tree!” Oreo responded, “But he is my tree!” A few days later, Oreo thought it would be fun to get into yarn while the humans were sleeping. Oreo had yarn strung around everything, such as the kitchen chairs and table legs. The humans were not too pleased with this, and neither was Quinn. Quinn was not happy with Oreo, because she ended up stuck in the yarn. Quinn then said to Oreo, “Do not take the yarn unless you are going to knit something!” Oreo, who was not very happy with Quinn, said, “But I just wanted to play!”

Oreo was not done playing with yarn just yet. A few days after the last yarn incident, Oreo thought it would be fun to open the yarn that her mom had bought to knit something, and then yet again string yarn throughout the house. Quinn was very annoyed with her actions. Quinn said to Oreo, “Quit playing with the yarn!” Oreo then responded, “It’s fun to play with, mommy!”

Oreo’s final ideas were Quinn’s least favorite of them all. Oreo decided it would be fun to “wrestle” with Quinn on the humans’ beds. Oreo pounced on Quinn when she was not looking or when she was taking a bath, and this would cause fighting between the cats. Oreo would put her paws around Quinn’s neck and put her in a “headlock.” This would result in hissing from both cats. Quinn would then say to Oreo, “Go find somewhere else to play!” Oreo responded by saying, “I just wanted to play with my mommy!” Oreo also had another idea, and that was to steal Quinn’s treats when she was not looking. Oreo would steal the treats when Quinn was in another room or sleeping soundly. However, one time Quinn caught Oreo in the act of doing so, and was not pleased. Quinn went over to Oreo and hissed and said, “How dare you steal my treats behind my back!” Oreo then responded, “I’m sorry Quinn. I was just hungry!”

After Oreo had lived with the family for a few months, Quinn realized something. She realized that even though Oreo could be annoying at times, she had a soft spot for the new kitten in her heart. Quinn decided that Oreo was not so bad after all. Quinn realized that she still had everything that a cat could dream of, especially a house to live in and a loving family, but she realized that her family was helping another kitten who did not have a home. Quinn realized this and went up to Oreo and said, “I love you.” The cats then went and lay together on their human’s bed and snuggled until they fell asleep.
