Technical ESOs for 8th Graders: Keeping your Computer Secure
At Enlightium Academy, students have Expected Student Outcomes (ESOs) for each grade level. This means that upon completing the 8th grade, each student is expected to grow not just academically, but spiritually and socially.
One of the three academic ESOs is technical capabilities. Upon reviewing this article, students in 8th grade are expected to learn how to keep your computer secure.
Students should review this article with a parent.
Your computer (and your phone) can feel like an extra arm on your body. You can do more, faster and better. Remember that the extra arm is connected to you, so you need to take care of it and not let others use it to damage you.
Use a Password.
Any device that you own, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, should be password-protected. Without protection, anyone could walk up and access your Facebook or your bank account. It is important for your parent to know your computer’s password too. If you have nothing to hide, then sharing your password with your parent should not concern you.
Bring it with you.
If you are using your laptop in a public place like a coffee shop, put it in a backpack and bring it with you to the restroom. All it takes is a moment for someone to walk by, grab it, and you may never see your computer again.
